Luxury After Dark: How We Keep the Nightlife in Our Travels (for Two)

Growing up together doesn't mean slowing down. We love music, we love a great night out, and some of our favourite travel memories happened after dark: cocktails on a rooftop facing the Acropolis, a whole restaurant twirling napkins over their heads, and a sing-along to Mamma Mia! under the stars. Here's how we pair a luxurious trip with a genuinely good time, and still wake up for the view.
Our favourite nights out, so far
Athens: rooftops facing the Acropolis
Athens might be the best rooftop city in Europe. Our first dinner was at Taratsa, a solid 10/10, with the Acropolis right there in front of us. We loved MS Roof Garden above Monastiraki for an easy drink with a view, and we saved Attic for our last night: flower-covered swings facing the Parthenon, and cocktails that arrive in a cloud of coffee smoke. (All the details are in our Athens guide.)

Santorini: champagne in a windmill and a film under the stars
Our first night, we had dinner at Mylos Restaurant & Champagne Bar, inside a historic windmill on the caldera in Firostefani, with its sails lit up against the night sky. The next night was the highlight of our whole trip: a candlelit dinner at Barolo in Fira, then a short walk to the open-air Volkan Cinema for Mamma Mia! under the stars. It doesn't need to be loud to be the best night of your trip. (More in our Santorini guide.)

Paros: golden hour at Cabana, then napkins in the air at Axinos
Cabana on Parikia Bay is our idea of a perfect beach club: plush sunbeds, good cocktails and a DJ who turns it up after 5pm as the sun drops over the bay. And at Axinos on Naoussa's old port, stay late. At around 10pm the music goes up, the staff start dancing and the whole restaurant joins in, twirling white napkins over their heads. Before all that, a pink cocktail by the water at Fotis All Day Bar set the tone. (More in our Paros guide.)

How we pace a trip with a nightlife vibe
Live on local time: siesta, then a late dinner
In Greece, Spain and Italy, dinner starts late and the evening runs long. We plan around it: an active morning, a slow afternoon by the pool or a proper nap, then out the door at golden hour. That afternoon rest is what makes a late night feel effortless. (Our summer heat guide has the full daily rhythm.)
One big night, one slow night
The secret to keeping it romantic: don't go big every night. Follow a big night out with a slow one, like a long dinner for two or a night in. In Paros we followed the excitement of Axinos with a villa movie night and dinner delivered by Wolt, and it was one of our favourite evenings of the trip.
Book beach clubs ahead (and ask about minimum spends)
In high season, the best sunbeds and daybeds go early, so book ahead, especially for weekends. Many beach clubs set a minimum spend per sunbed or daybed instead of (or as well as) a rental fee, so ask exactly what's included when you book. Arrive in the afternoon, settle in, and stay for golden hour, when the music lifts and the light is at its prettiest.
Dress for day-to-night
The chicest nights out start at the beach and never go back to the hotel. Choose pieces that work for both: a slip dress or a linen set over a swimsuit, flat sandals you can dance in, a light wrap for breezy rooftops, and a little gold jewelry in your bag to put on at sunset.
Pace yourselves
- Water between every drink. Order a bottle for the table along with the cocktails.
- Electrolytes before you head out and again before bed, especially after a hot day in the sun.
- Eat properly. Late dinner first, dancing after.
Getting home safely
- Pre-book your ride home on the islands, where taxis can be scarce late at night, or ask your restaurant or hotel to call one.
- Save your hotel's address (and a screenshot of it in the local alphabet in Greece) on both phones.
- Keep a phone charged with a power bank, and agree on a meeting point if you get separated in a crowd.
- Watch your drinks, keep your bag zipped and in front, and leave together.
Planning a trip around a festival
A festival can be the most elevated night out of all if you plan it like a luxury trip: a beautiful hotel a short ride away, a long lunch before, and a slow morning after. Our tips:
- Book the hotel the moment you buy tickets. Rooms near big festivals sell out fast.
- Pick one or two days, not all of them. Spend the rest of the trip exploring the city together.
- Look at premium or VIP tickets. Better views, shorter queues and somewhere to sit can be worth it.
- Pack high-fidelity earplugs. Your ears will thank you the next morning, and the music still sounds clear.
- Plan your way home before the last set: official shuttles, a pre-booked car or a walkable hotel.
