Arena Floor or Underground? Which Colosseum Tour to Book in Rome

The short answer

If you book one Colosseum tour as a couple, make it the arena floor: a semi-private tour (six guests at most) that enters through the Gladiator's Gate and continues to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Save the underground tour for a second visit, or if you love history.

We've done the Colosseum twice, in two very different ways: once standing out on the arena floor, and once deep in the underground passages beneath it. Both were memorable. But if you're booking just one Colosseum tour as a couple, our answer is easy: the small-group arena floor tour.

Here's how the two compare, and why the arena floor won us over.

Our pick

The arena floor: the one we'd book again first

You enter the arena floor through the Gladiator's Gate, the same entrance fighters once walked through, and suddenly you're standing in the middle of it all, with the tiers rising around you and the underground opening up at your feet. The arena floor is normally off limits to regular visitors, and it gives you the closest view of the underground without going down into it.

What made it our favourite was the whole morning, not just one moment. With a small, semi-private group, we could hear every word, ask questions and stop for photos without being rushed. The tour then carries on to the Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum, so in about three hours you see the Colosseum and the heart of ancient Rome together, with the story connecting them.

The underground: one for history buffs or a second visit

The underground, or hypogeum, is where animals and gladiators were held before being lifted into the arena. It's a fascinating maze of brick passages, and if you love the engineering and the history, you'll find it thrilling. It's also a different feeling: cooler and dimmer down there, more enclosed, and you spend less time looking up at the amphitheatre itself.

The honest tradeoffs: underground slots are limited and sell out early, and many underground tours run with bigger groups than the semi-private arena floor tour, which matters in narrow passages. The tour we took also met away from the Colosseum, by the Imperial Forums, so allow time to find your group. If we went down into the underground again, we'd choose a smaller group.

Our tips for couples

  • Bring ID for both of you. Names on the booking must match your passports or ID cards at the entrance.
  • Wear your most comfortable shoes. The Forum and the Palatine are uneven underfoot, and neither tour is wheelchair accessible.
  • Pack light. Large bags and backpacks aren't allowed in the monument.
  • Morning is golden. The Forum has little shade, so an early start is cooler.
  • Save the underground for next time. It's the perfect reason to come back to Rome.

Our verdict

If you only book one, make it the arena floor. It's the moment the Colosseum stops being a postcard and becomes a place you've stood in, together. Then, when Rome calls you back (it will), go underground.

Quick questions

Which Colosseum tour is best for couples?

Our pick is the semi-private arena floor tour, with six guests at most. You stand on the arena floor itself, get the closest look at the underground without going down, and continue to the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.

Is the Colosseum underground tour worth it?

Yes, if you love history or it's your second visit. It takes you into the passages beneath the arena. Small groups fill up, so book early.
